During the first week of school, the children were eating apples and pulled out the seeds inside them. They asked to plant them to see if they would grow. It has now been almost 9 weeks since we planted and exciting things have happened. We planted 19 containers of apple seeds and three of them have sprouted. It took 23 days for the first seed to pop through the soil. The children reminded me when it poked through the soil that the seed had been cracked a little when we planted them. The second two popped through this week and are quickly catching up to and even out growing the original seed.
Around a month ago, someone left an apple in our classroom. We left it by the seeds to see what would happen to it. Today we cut it open and were excited to see that the apple has been sprouting. We counted out 7 seven seeds that have started to grow inside the apple. We took the seeds and planted them in cups. The children predicted that they will take root and grow now that they are in soil. The children are working hard to write scientific observations. We talk about how you can not use words like cool or awesome in science.
